SYNOPSIS
CLA, a humanoid robot, undergoes facial expression training conducted by Dr Paul Hofmann. CLA learns from Paul how to express emotions such as anger, fear and joy authentically. But the lesson slowly spirals out of control because CLA laughs too much. While CLA laughs uncontrollably, Paul also breaks into fits of laughter and can’t stop. Can laughter be contagious between humans and AI robots?

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
The film CLA explores laughter as a linguistic and acoustic expression for bridging the gap between humans and AI robots. Laughing and smiling facial expressions convey different meanings depending on the situation and influence the conversation both intentionally and unintentionally. On the other hand, ‘laughter’ also unfolds as a musical component, building in intensity with its diverse rhythms, textures, dynamics and tones. The laughter ‘song’ evokes strong feelings of ‘happiness’ and ‘fear’, creating an acoustic resonance field between humans and AI robots.
